Volunteer
At the UC Davis Arboretum and Public Garden, we rely on volunteer support in every area of our work. In 2024, volunteers donate more than 30,000 hours of service each year. As a volunteer, you learn new skills and meet new people while supporting our environment! Whatever your skills or interests, the Arboretum and Public Garden welcomes you!
Are you a student? If so, be sure to check out our Learning by Leading program or consider a single-day volunteer event.
There are currently two volunteer tracks:
- Single-day volunteers
- Weekly volunteers
Single-Day Volunteer Opportunities
Our single-day volunteer opportunities that don't require prior training. We host volunteers without prior training at our renowned plant sales, community volunteer days the second Saturday of each month, intermittent tree planting events, garden clean-up projects throughout the year, and more. We also work with volunteers for special projects in garden design, computer programming, marketing, photography, and other fields. Service organizations are also welcome to contact Kitty Bolte to arrange a team-building event that includes a day of work in the garden.
Weekly / Regular Volunteers
We are currently recruiting gardening volunteers! Apply through Jan. 13, 2025.
The Arboretum and Public Garden typically recruits volunteers for our weekly volunteer teams in January. We begin by offering a series of training classes for new volunteers interested in joining a team that meets for three hours, one morning each week. After completing the initial training, volunteers are matched with a team based on their skills, interests, and weekday availability. Each team is led by experienced horticulture staff, with additional "on-the-job" training provided.
Below are examples of the types of weekly volunteer opportunities we offer. (Please note that not all opportunities listed may be actively recruiting at this time.)
