Job Opportunity for Student Landscape Assistant

Join the Arboretum and Public Garden team to help steward our landscapes! Student landscape assistants will work independently and in teams, as well as assist in the leadership of volunteer groups. Master your skills in garden maintenance, installation and safe machinery operation. Develop experience in plant identification, plant records and mapping. This position also provides the opportunity to develop leadership skills in public garden outreach and management.

Job Description

Under the supervision of Arboretum and Public Garden staff, this student position will work both independently and in teams to maintain new and existing landscapes and plantings in the Arboretum and on campus. Duties will include weeding, mulching, maintaining paths, pruning, raking, sweeping, digging, hand watering and keeping gardens clear of litter. They will assist with the maintenance and installation of plantings, pathways, irrigation systems, outdoor furniture, general equipment and signage. They will use hand tools and operate power tools such as string trimmer, mower, blower and small tractor. As a representative of the Arboretum and Public Garden team, this position also provides general assistance to visitors and will assist with coordination, organization and management of volunteer work crews.

Qualifications

Must be able to work 10-12 hours per week during the school year, and preferably more over the summer. Coursework and/or experience in horticulture, landscape architecture and/or engineering is highly desirable. Experience with landscape maintenance and/or construction, using hand and power tools, plant identification is necessary. Experience excavating soil, with hand tools, operating landscape equipment, power tools and irrigation systems is preferrable. Able to repeatedly lift 40 pounds from ground to waist height. Must be able to perform all tasks in a safe manner and operate with care around valuable plant collections. Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions including summer heat. Salary: $15.25/hour
