Under the supervision of Arboretum and Public Garden staff, this position will work in teams and independently to maintain trees and plantings in the campus landscape. The position will focus on the stewardship and establishment care of young trees and care of mature trees in the Arboretum and Public Garden. The team will be integral to our climate adaptation and tree conservation projects, growing oaks and other trees from California, the Southwest US and around the world. Watering will be a critical function for this position, which will include monitoring automatic irrigation systems and plant appearance, running small manual systems, and watering by hand. Tree Stewards will perform a variety of maintenance tasks, such as watering, mulching, staking, weeding, and pruning. They will assist as needed with the maintenance of plants, gardens, pathways, general equipment, and signage; use hand tools and operate light power tools such as string trimmers and mowers. As a representative of the Arboretum and Public Garden, this position also provides general assistance to visitors.
Must be able to work 10-15 hours per week during spring quarter and 20-30 hours per week during the summer. Ideally, candidates will have regular availability weekdays in the summer from 7am-12pm. Good working knowledge of UC Davis campus and sense of direction is desired. Previous practical gardening, pruning, maintenance and landscape plant identification experience preferred. Good interpersonal skills necessary for communicating with staff, volunteers, and the general public. Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including hot and cold temperatures, and ability to lift up to 40 lbs required. Must be able to perform all tasks in a safe manner and operate with care around valuable trees and plant collections. Valid drivers license required.
