Lead a team of interns in managing and caring for nursery plants as a co-coordinator for the Arboretum and Public Garden's Learning by Leading™ Nursery Management team.

  • Estimated Start Date: Summer 2026
  • Salary: $17.40/hour
Time commitment
  • Must be able to work 10 to 15 hours per week during the school year and at least one month over the summer.
  • Must cover watering shifts at least one weekend per quarter and work occasional weekend events.

Position Description

Under the supervision of Arboretum and Public Garden staff, this position will:

  • Work with a fellow co-coordinator and staff mentors to develop the year-long Learning by Leading™ internship curriculum and trainings. 
  • Lead 8 to 12 interns in managing plant propagation, care and maintenance of over 60,000 plants at the Arboretum Teaching Nursery
  • Lead hands-on trainings in facilities management, propagation technical skills, irrigation management, integrated pest management, and phytosanitary best management practices.
  • Prepare interns to host Plant Sales and other outreach events, working as a team to update plant inventories, label plants, table, and help customers. 
  • Keep a clean growing area and follow phytosanitary best practices. 
  • Use hand tools and operate power tools such as a pressure washer, blower, and a small tractor.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have experience and interest in propagation, nursery management and/or horticulture.
  • Must have experience and interest in leading and motivating teams to reach shared goals.
  • Must be able to perform all tasks in a safe manner and operate with care around valuable plant collections. 
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions including summer heat.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in practical gardening, pruning, maintenance and landscape plant identification.
  • Coursework in horticulture, landscape architecture, and/or engineering.
