Quercus fusiformis, escarpment live oak, is a medium-sized, semi-evergreen tree with a spreading high crown. This tree is similar in appearance to Quercus virginiana, but is better adapted to hot, dry regions.
At lower elevations, suffers from heat stress in July and suceptible to leaf spot diseases; Resistant to Verticillium. Susceptible to Insect Galls, Armillaria, Phytophthora, Live Oak Wilt, and Root Rot. Allergy and Poisonous Health Hazard. Biogenic Emissions considered High.
Good potential utility as an urban tree based on evaluation of 24 trees, healthy crown, 100% survival, moderate growth rate. Herbivory and leaf dieback found on a majority of individuals. This species was tricky to transplant in the nursery. Training may be required as many plants are naturally multi-trunked.
We got good germination with seed sown in October. Seedlings are moderately fast growing.
