A Little Rain, a Lot of Opportunity

Rainy Plant Sales Are the Perfect Time to Shop

A few light sprinkles may be in the forecast for our upcoming plant sale—but seasoned gardeners know that’s actually good news. In fact, this kind of weather creates ideal planting conditions.

“Cooler temperatures and lightly moistened soil make digging easier, reduce transplant shock, and help new plants settle in more successfully,” said Abbey Hart, UC Davis Arboretum and Public Garden nursery manager.

“It’s the kind of day your future garden will thank you for. And we’re ready for it.”

The Arboretum Teaching Nursery now features concrete and gravel pathways, making it safer and easier to navigate—even with a little rain.

“We’re also setting up plenty of umbrellas and pop-up tents,” said Hart. “Plus, our shade cloths help diffuse light rain.”

While a few people may decide to stay home, savvy shoppers will recognize this as one of the best times to visit. Fewer crowds, ideal planting conditions, and a well-prepared nursery—it all adds up to a great experience.

So grab a light jacket, your favorite gardening hat, and come see us. This might just be the perfect plant sale day in disguise.
