Position Title
Member-at-Large
John Lindbo has a life-long interest in plants and agriculture. Born in Eastern Montana and raised primarily in the Pacific Northwest, gardening and the outdoors have always been his interests. After completing his Ph.D. in microbiology from Oregon State University, where he worked with plant viruses, he accepted a postdoctoral research position at UC Davis. Since then he has left and re-located back to Northern California two more times.
John’s professional career as a researcher has always involved plants and has included stints at the Plant Pathology departments of UC Davis and Ohio State University, in addition to a local biotech company, and as a faculty member at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington. He is currently employed as a research fellow at the vegetable seed company HM Clause (in Davis) where he studies plant virus diseases in vegetables to support plant breeding efforts.
He and his wife live with their two dogs, two cats, and eight chickens on a property with hundreds of different plant varieties and species, the names of which he is still learning. He is an active gardener of a large vegetable garden. His hobbies include cooking (and eating), spending time outdoors, and gardening.
When asked what he would hope to help with while a member of the Friends Board, John commented that he would like to see more people realize that a lawn in the front and back yard is not the only way to go, and that you can have really beautiful, healthy landscapes using native plants or other plants that don’t use as many resources such as water and fertilizer. He would like to see more people adopt this approach.
