Cercis canadensis var. texensis
Texas Redbud
Cercis canadensis var. texensis, Texas redbud, is a small vase shaped, multi-branched tree with showy pink flowers in spring and deciduous heart-shaped foliage. It is found in arid, hot climates and is fast growing.
3 main diseases: leaf anthracnose, botryosphaeria canker, and verticillium wilt. Additionally redhumped caterpillars and several different species of borer affect the tree.
Fair potential utility as an urban tree based on evaluation of 11 trees, healthy crown, 100% survival, slow growth rate. Possible signs of chlorosis or water stress on a few individuals. Species susceptible to red humped caterpillars. Plants in site with excessive irrigation and poor drainage died.
Viable seed was difficult to find on collecting trip. Nonetheless, we've had great germination with 30 minute 200*F water soak, greenhouse sown in January. Seedlings are growing moderately fast.
