With the Arboretum Teaching Nursery nearly at plant capacity, we finally have a moment to appreciate many of the new pollinator plants we have been growing for you this fall. It was way too easy to come up with a list full of fabulous plants that will look great in your garden, attract one or another pollinator, be drought tolerant, and handle our Sacramento Valley conditions. In an effort to save part of this living history, two UC Davis Arboretum and Public Garden staff members are going the extra mile to propagate the boxelder, as well as many other species in Capitol Park that suffered during the recent drought.

The Arboretum Teaching Nursery is brimming with thousands of amazing plants which makes it really hard to pick just five, so after much debate between Propagation Specialist Lisa Fowler and me, we happily present you with five not-to-be-missed plants that we will have available at our upcoming fall plant sales.

If you are looking for your next favorite plant, you will be blown away by all that’s new in our fall inventory. For those of you in the market for our traditional “staple” plants, fear not! We will always grow our core selection of regionally appropriate species. The Arboretum All-Stars you know and love will always have plenty of table space reserved.

Ever wonder why some plants in your yard seem to thrive more than others? Sure there are multiple factors at play, including plant quality, soil quality, sun exposure and location, but one of the most often overlooked issues is timing – when you plant makes all the difference.

Nursery Manager Taylor Lewis was featured in the Sac Bee on Saturday, October 11 in the Home and Garden section. The article highlights his focus on native plants as well as the Friends of the Arboretum and Public Garden fall plant sales.

Sunday, October 5, 2014, our own Ellen Zagory, director of public horticulture and Taylor Lewis, nursery manager, were featured on Farmer Fred’s radio show “Get Growing with Farmer Fred” on KSTE 650 AM from 10-11:30 a.m.

At the request of the Governor's office, Taylor Lewis, horticulturist and nursery manager, together with Haven Kiers, special projects manager and lecturer for the campus’s landscape architecture program, will represent the UC Davis Arboretum and Public Garden at the Water Preparedness event to provide attendees with resources to “waterwise” their landscapes.
