Shields Oak Grove Turns 50

In honor of the grove’s 50th anniversary, the arboretum hosted about 50 people for a celebration under the Persian oaks near the grove’s entryway. The anniversary celebration brought together several people with strong connections to those Persian oaks and the hundreds of other oaks in the collection.

Nature's Gallery Court update

The last two weeks have been a flurry of activity at Nature’s Gallery Court as co-founders of the UC Davis Art-Science Fusion program Diane Ullman and Donna Billick have been able to install the Nature’s Gallery mosaic mural of 140 tiles hand-crafted by UC Davis students, staff, faculty and community members. The art is truly stunning in its new home and is sure to become a famous campus landmark.

Visitor map improvement project underway

The typical “newbie-to-UC Davis” experience is on the way to a major revamp. Large maps will be placed at key locations throughout campus giving a much-needed hand to the millions of visitors our campus receives every year.

The sales received some really great press so members of the Friends of the UC Davis Arboretum have their fingers crossed for an excellent spring fundraising season! UC Davis Conference and Event Services showcases campus as wedding venue

In addition to all the excellent work UC Davis Conference and Event Services staff does to market the university both locally and nationwide, they saw an opportunity to further establish the campus as a favorite venue for brides and event planners by organizing the ‘Weddings and More Special Events Showcase’ at Freeborn Hall on March 4th.

A couple of weeks ago a grading project was taking place along our Putah Creek waterway to provide a research venue for faculty and students in Wildlife and Conservation Biology, create a much-needed waterway improvement for our campus utilities department, AND restore the habitat of the native Western Pond Turtle.

400 new oak trees planted in campus Riparian Reserve

In the past few weeks the Putah Creek Riparian Reserve, has hosted two different service organizations interested in conservation and habitat restoration. Wild Campus, a student group whose mission is to engage students and the community in the conservation of native wildlife, planted 100 oak trees amongst Eucalyptus trees slated for removal on the reserve. The area, now renamed Wild Campus Grove, will be cared for by the student group which received saplings from the Sacramento Tree Foundation.
